Xbox 360 to come with stringent parental controls

360 News | Website reveals Hillary Clinton-appeasing security features.
Japanese website Mainichi has revealed that Microsoft's next-generation Xbox 360 console will come equipped with a parental locking system that can be used to prevent children from accessing games unsuitable for their age range, thus preventing the triggering of murderous urges in little Johnnys and Janes everywhere.

The site describes how parents will be able to set-up the console so that it will only play games with suitable age ratings, with the console reading data from the game disc to ascertain whether or not the age rating is appropriate. Whether or not children will be able to access online chatrooms will also be put into parent's hands.

Of course, parental control and age ratings are a rather topical subject, particularly with all the recent fuss over the Grand Theft Auto/Hot Coffee mod furore. As soon as we hear more on this, we'll get back to you.

ugh.. I don't like the sound of that at all.. And if those parents know what's good for them, they'll disable the security features by the time Halo 3 comes around.

makes sense to me...

you've been able to do this with DVD players for a long time (even the PS2 has the feature) but games don't have the censorship protection...

at least then the media might turn to parents if anything happens...
"little johnny killed my cat, it's turbo ultra gamez fault!"
"urm, no you should've stopped his console from playing M Rated games"
nah, it won't happen... you can't tell off you demographic...

not to mention that what kid is going to tell their parents they now have a method of stopping them playing games?

if the advertise it as a feature, maybe it'll do something... otherwise it's a pretty, but useless feature...
