The Rainbow Six series has always been a squad-based anti-terrorist shooter and this latest incarnation isn’t going to change that too much. As the title implies, the game will be based in Las Vegas. All the buildings and surroundings in the game are all being designed to make the entire game look like Las Vegas. However, the game itself will not have any buildings or areas that are exactly the same as the real Las Vegas. This is primarily due to security reasons.
As a squad-based shooter and something of a spin-off from GRAW, Las Vegas will be trying to implement new ways of interacting with your squad. One of these ways is by tagging your team-mates and others. This can be used to direct them off in different directions. While hunting down terrorists, you don’t want them to be hearing you bark orders, though it could work as a distraction, while you sneak around the other side.
In another example of the series moving silently forward, the game will add to your arsenal of gadgets. One of these additions is a camera that will allow you to see behind doors and around corners. Given that Ubisoft are the creators of Splinter Cell, such an addition is hardly a surprise but definitely a welcome one. The gameplay will depend a lot on this, as your main means of combat will be using duck-and-cover methods. Unlike previous Rainbow Six titles, this time you can play from the third-person perspective - most likely from over the shoulder.
Graphically, the game looks like it's been based on the GRAW engine. Even if this is the case, there have been some improvements made. Given that the game will be played quite a lot indoors and even at night, the improvements are necessary. From what we have seen so far, the game is looking mightily impressive. There is one scene where Sam is parachuting from an airplane. The graphics look cgi quality during the decent, however you're actually controlling Sam - moving him and judging when to pull the parachute release. It really is taking advantage of the next-generation hardware.
As is often the case with E3 we weren't allowed to play the game ourselves, however we did watch a whole level being demoed in front of us. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Las Vegas has a lot of the credentials from past titles and some flair that’s carrying on from the development of GRAW. If any of this comes together, we’re sure to have another great time ridding the free world of those pesky terrorists.
