Colin McRae shifts gears into the next generation

360 News | He's a dirty man.
The extremely popular and long-running racing series, symbolised by rally legend Colin McRae, is making the move to next generation consoles. So far referred to only as Colin McRae Rally 2007, the official title for PAL territories is now Colin McRae: DIRT.

Fed up with a squeaky clean image of being one of the best rally racing franchises in the business, Codemasters are looking to overhaul the engine and deliver an even more authentic rally experience. The game is reported to take players off-road in a wide selection of vehicles and events, and represent the change in environment with an all-new damage and physics engine "that ensures players experience every bump in the track, every loose rock, every inch of shifting dirt through the reactive environments".

As standard, there will also be races down the beaten track with point-to-point championships on dirt and sealed roads. The licensed rally vehicles will certainly make a return, and we are also told to expect 4x4s and Dakar-style desert machines. Check out the media panel for the official screenshots.

DIRT will debut simultaneously on the Xbox360, PS3 and PC in 2007.

I thought there would surely be rally driving games with the 360 launch as with previous console releases.I totally forgot about that genre.
Good to see that they are re-designing the engine, the last one was well done,i can only imagine how good it will be.And maybe when we fall off a cliff we can actually see it roll right down into the chasm as opposed to a couple of metres then teleported.
Sounds/looks good.

What's Colin McRae games like these days anyway? Last one I played was CMR2 which was definitely awesome.

Eh, even if the CMR games are still good I don't think I'll be pleased until another Rallisport Challenge is announced.

Just hope they dont use the same crappy physics engine as in v8 supercars 3 or they should rename the game to "codemasters: Going downhill fast"

CM05 is great, well worth picking up for PS2 or preferably Xbox. Far less arcadey than RalliSport but very good in a different way. I could have sworn I'd reviewed either CM04 or 05 for PALGN, I must have written it elsewhere because I 100% remember writing about it icon_confused.gif

Never! I've reviewed CMR 2005, tis a decent game.

I prefer Rallisport though, Rally is such a niche genre anywhere outside of Europe so it's always good when we get a rally game.

and now that Australia has lost the WRC stage completely (yep, WA dropped it and the FIA rejected the other states' bid for it) it'll probably mean we'll have even less exposure to the genre.

although, afaik, we got all the Rally games that were released, and usually on release with the European games, unlike the US who have to wait 6 months plus for them.

Sucks about the WRC event doesn't it Obs? Seems like next year is quite a different one for Australian Motorsport, nationally or internationally.

I did read the PALGN review but I didn't recall doing so. icon_wink.gif Apologies Luke. Guess I'll have to check out the Colin McRae franchise again then. I'm really getting into my rally titles at the moment.

Rally used to be my favourite "specific" genre, but with the introduction of Burnout, I somehow ended up transitioning to that style of game being my preference. Since then I only occasionally play rally titles. icon_sad.gif
