New Sonic the Hedgehog screens

360 News | Hot hedgehog on robot action within.
One of the first titles Sega announced for new generation of consoles was a new Sonic game, simply entitled Sonic the Hedgehog. While some fans have expressed disappointment at the game's new setting and new characters, Sega are promising that the latest entry into the popular series will please fans of the spikey critter and his (rather diverse) range of friends.

Just today, Sega has issued a bunch of new screenshots of Sonic the Hedgehog in action. Unfortunately, they neglected to specify which system they were for, but one could speculate that the game is going to look fairly identical on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 anyway. The new images can be found in the image panel.

Sonic the Hedgehog is due to launch with the PlayStation 3 on November 17th, and should be available around the same time for the Xbox 360. We'll have a full review of the game when the time comes.

Fans of Sonic and his rather diverse friends? Sonic is my hero, but I'm not sure I could even pretend to like his friends to be near him. Who really wants to play as anything but the spiky blue hedgehog? Blaze sits lonely in Sonic Rush, and Sonic is the only one to mount gear in Riders (I'm too crap to unlock NiGHTS and Ulala icon_cry.gif )

Sonic is truly the antithesis of Mario, I mean who selects the fat plumber given the choice? For all the games of Mario Kart (and associated titles) its the other faces that seem to be the favourites.

Fight over Sonic or not to be Mario?

Lets hope sega can pull it off.

Looking awesome as usual, I liked the original shots they released, and it looks like it's still going well. icon_smile.gif

döppelganger: Sad, but true.

It's not for lack of good characters, but out of the roster, only Tails and Knuckles were any fun to play with, as their unique abilities let you explore new areas in the same levels, as opposed to having levels dedicated to them. Knuckles even used to be a cool character in the Mega Drive days, as opposed to the blundering idiot he's been since Sonic Adventure.

Metal Sonic is definitely my pick for favourite non-Sonic character, as well as Sonic's ultimate nemesis. I said even before Sonic Adventure 2 was released that the introduction of Shadow was unnecessary and unoriginal.

Still, this new character, Silver, looks like he could be interesting... I can totally understand ignoring Blaze in Sonic Rush, but a character that's basically Sonic but with a splash of Neo and a smidge of Jedi? Bring it on.

As for the game, it looks to be shaping up well.. I'm defintely more optimistic about this than Sonic Wildfire... oh, I mean... Sonic and the Secret Rings... *le sigh*

The only Sonic game that I didn't like was Sonic Heroes. I didn't like it for it's gameplay. icon_confused.gif

Hopefully it won't be as bad as Shadow The Hedgehog. I really didn't like the style of that game.

The best would have to have been Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. That game > All other sonic games.

I actually liked Shadow the Hedgehog, which seems to mean that I'm one of the only ones. The only Sonic game I haven't liked is Sonic Rush. I thought that that was unneccesary and crap. Shadow's OK, because he is very different to Sonic, not in apperance, but in personality. It's good to have a mix of characters, and he is the dark, mysterious one, kind of like Vincent in FFVII.

It's one of many glitches on the Games Panel. James will look into it (won't you, James icon_smile.gif)

Is anyone else completely over Sonic games? they were good back in the day, but in recent years they are atricious. i dont know why so many fanboys are looking forward to this crap.

I'm not a huge fan of sonic. In fact I only have 2 games of Sonic, Sonic Advance 3 and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. They're not all bad. Some turn out to be quite good.

Yeah, the transition to 3D went pretty well for Sonic, generally. I have Sonic Adventure, Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Heroes, Soinc adventure is the best, I didn't like Sonic Heroes. I've played Sonic Adventure 2, the original Sonic games, and the gameboy ones as well. All in all, I think they're pretty good.

Everyone has their ideas about what would make a good 3D Sonic game.
I really liked the speed run aspects of the Sonic Adventure games, being forced to go as fast as possible. What I didn't really like was how every level is like a linear racetrack. I'd really like to see a free-roaming... make that free running Sonic world that gives you mission style objectives based around ring collecting, getting from A to B to C as fast as possible and occaisional exploration, without the constant risk of falling out around every blind corner!

Sonic Rush is the best Sonic in years, and I liked how Riders is unashamedly about racetracks, because its a racer. I just think Sonic needs to do something different for the 3D platformers.

Or just don't do 3D Sonic platformers. I mean, if they constantly get criticised for being crap, while the 2D versions get praised, then why bother with the 3D?

If the games were less linear it wouldn't be as fast as it is. You need a linear track to help keep the speed. The treasure hunting parts of Adventure 2 were slower but alot less linear. I wouldn't want sonics levels to end up like that.

It's possible to make a good 3D Sonic platformer. Sonic Adventure 2 (Battle) was pretty good, IMO. The Green Hill extra in it was great too.
Plus, SRB2 (fanmade) shows it's possible to make a 3D platformer that sticks quite closely to the style and fun of the originals (there are occasional branching paths, like in the original, too).

I'm not completely over 3D Sonic games. I still have a bit of hope that one day Sega will wake up and actually make a good one. I won't be buying any of the ones that appear in the meantime though. icon_neutral.gif
