Burnout 5 announced

360 News | Reinvention for the series promised.
EA has announced today something we've all been expecting for a while: that Burnout 5 is currently in development for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. Burnout 5 will give players the opportunity to wreak havoc in Paradise City.

The entire game will be a lot more open-ended, so gone are the days of menus. Every part of the world is there for exploration, which means any area could hold the potential for a deadly crash junction. When you first begin the game you'll be assigned a license, which will keep track of all your statistics.

Alex Ward, director of Game design at Criterion, said, "Burnout 5 is a complete reinvention of the series, built from the ground up for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360". We're hoping he's right, because the last thing we want is for the franchise to grow stale.

Burnout 5 is due for release in 2007, and we hope to have the first images up shortly.

Grrr. I like menus! I'm sick of everything being 'open ended', espescially with cars. It just means I'll spend half my time getting to something that I used to jump to instantly.

Sounds sweet, I reckon the last one gone abit too far though, what happened to the good old Burnout 2 days where it was about dodging traffics & cars rather then hitting them.

I'm cautious... if it ends up anything like the abysmal NFSU2, I'll be the first Burnout game I don't buy.

QFT

If they do away with their current track structure (shortcuts are fine, as in Revenge), there's no chance I'll be getting this. Checkpoint racing just isn't any fun at all.

Also I've heard that renderware isn't so great for next gen (in it's current state), and it might be up to this game to show what the engine is capable of. They'll have to work their asses off to build back the popularity it had for the XB/GC/PS2 generation. Even EA are turning to other solutions, makes you wonder if they're still gonna get their money's worth from Criterion.

I have to agree with that. Although the next editions of the series were still great it did take something away from the challenge of the games. This new version sounds like TDU but with awesome damage as opposed to no damage but we will just have to wait and see if it works out for the best or not. The one thing that I am stoked about is the fact it will be the first burnout game that is developed exclusively for next gen consoles and therefore can take advantage of the hardware as opposed to being a port with HD added.

Yes, exactley! Burnout 2 still holds a special place in my mind as one of the best racing games ever. I loved the additions to Burnout 3 (takedowns), but was a little unenthused with Revenge for the exact reason you stated.
I'm also a little leery of this 'open world' business... everyone wants to make their games into a sandbox these days, and more often then not it just doesn't work well. However, I think Criterion have a pretty good chance to pull it off - they've worked wonders so far.

i think they should just add more cars per race - like ridge racer. nothing better than racing from 14th to 1st and winning it on the last corner even if the AI isnt that good.

The rubber band AI of Burnout 2 and 3 really annoyed the heck out of me.

I was never interested in the intersection collision mini game - too much loading for too little gameplay.

Also i find that many games are designing one big city and lots of tracks within. while i do believe its a good idea, there needs to be some variation on the tracks please otherwise they all end up looking the same!!!

LEts hope it's more like NFS:MW and less like NFSU otherwise, I'm pumed as well.

That's nice that another installment in the Burnout series is being produced, but I've had my fill after Burnout 3: Takedown.
