X06: Halo strategy title announced

360 News | Plus: Peter Jackson to work on brand new Halo property.
Microsoft has announced that a real-time strategy game set in the Halo universe will be winging its way to the Xbox 360 and PC. Virtually nothing is known about Halo Wars, except that the game is being developed by Ensemble Studios, the same company behind much of the excellent Age of Empires franchise. However, despite the dearth of information on the project, Ensemble's experience and impressive track record in the RTS genre should give fans considerable cause for optimism. As should the following (admittedly pre-rendered) trailer (right-click to download):

In other news related to Bungie's wildly popular sci-fi franchise, Lord of the Rings director and self-confessed Halo nut Peter Jackson also hit the X06 stage in Barcelona to announce that he'd struck a deal with Microsoft to create a new media property based on Halo. Jackson has dabbled in games before of course, assisting Ubisoft's Michel Ancel in the development of last year's impressive King Kong. However, Jackson's mystery Halo project will be neither a movie or a game, but a "property intended to pull new users into the interactive entertainment realm." And whatever it is that Jackson has up his sleeve, it'll apparently consist of two series, the first involving the world of Halo, and the second based on an entirely original premise. Intriguing stuff, eh?

Finally, in one last snippet of Halo-related news, Microsoft executive Peter Moore promised that we'd be hearing more on Halo 3 before the end of 2006. Huzzah!

Ensable's involvment has me interested, as does the fact that HALO was originally planned as an RTS anyway. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

On the other hand, I dunno how much i'll care when it comes out when Company of Heroes, Age of Empires III, the new Dawn of War expansion and the next Command and Conquer games are all on my shelf.

What's even more awesome is that, Ensemble's games usually end up on the Mac as well. Halo will have come a full circle icon_biggrin.gif

RTS is back in full swing after a lull. Apparently Chris (Taylor?) the marker of TA is making a new RTS too.
