Devil May Cry 4 goes multi-platform

360 News | Xbox 360 getting the game on day one, PC release to follow.
And another PS3 exclusive falls.

Capcom has announced on its Japanese website that the previously PS3 exclusive Devil May Cry 4 will also be released on the Xbox 360 and PC. While there have been unsubstantiated rumours of the possibility, it still comes as a shock, since unlike the similar rumours about the Metal Gear franchise jumping ship, the Devil May Cry series has always been exclusive to Sony machines. Also surprising is the announcement that the game will be coming to PC, although it is implied that it will be at a later date.

A machine translation of the Japanese press release reads:

"Devil May Cry 4 ' "PlayStation 3", Xbox 360, with the multi-platform of PC sale decision!, and says that after popular showings at the 2006 Tokyo Game Show, they decided to bring the game to both PS3 and Xbox 360 'simultaneously', with a later PC release assumed. The release date is only listed as 'Undecided', so it could still be a way off.

The PS3 has been going through some hard times recently, being handily outsold by its competitors in both Japan and the US every week, so Capcom's decision seems likely to be based on their perception of where money can be made. No mention of releases outside Japan yet, but given the 360 barely registers on the Japanese market, western releases would be the entire point of this announcement.

With spiralling game production costs, yeah I see it being the norm.

Sony and MS need to use foresight and buy up small developers with lots of potential. Look how important it was that the companies aquired Bungie and Naughty Dog.

At this stage 360 is having the more exclusives between the two in terms of third party. PS3 is losing exclusives by the minute. Majority will be multi.

Most consoles have a fairly shaky start as far as a good game libary goes, im part from Zelda what blockbuster hits did the Wii have? PS2, Xbox 1 were the same too, its just the nature of the beast.
LOL!!! what the f*** was Halo!!!!!
One game, just like Zelda was one game, just like Resistance is one game
Oh, your post was hard to interpret. I thought you meant no consoles have a blockbuster at launch.
Sorry, no thats not what I meant at all, consoles just dont seem to have a blockbuster line up at launch with one or two big name titles, I see how you can have interpreted it differently.

I don't see why this is Sony fault.
It is the greed of the publisher.

Instead of using all the resources and man powers to
develop a potentially good game, they compromised it
for extra extra money.
Capcom probably had a good deal with MS.

Oh well, I will be more selective this time around,
buying mainly first party games.

Gah ... icky ... I still think I'll pick up the PS3 version though.

And why is DMC4 on PC surprising? DMC3 was on PC...

They've still got Heavenly Sword and White Knight Story as well. icon_smile.gif They're not as well known of course, but they're still exclusive. Don't go thinking the PS3 is doomed yet, it's still tipped to sell out in Australia anyway.

Still, it's true that a lot of gamers will be buying the console for the exclusives (partially true for me, aside from it being a nice alternative from 360, and the better machine IMO). If they lose any more of their exclusives, the PS3 will suffer, but I think it will still survive on other new exclusives, such as the two I mentioned above. Casual gamers play a large role too, and the Blu-Ray player will always draw in people.

I hope the x360 version isnt a sloppy port, because ps3 version will have been the most likely target platform.

Given Capcom's experience with the 360 thus far they must better equipped to code a game for it. A sloppy "port" would be a seriously bad move because the game will sell more on the 360 (if released this year at least) due to the amount of 360s out there. Not only that but Capcom knows what to do for it's important franchises. Look at the PS2 version of RE:4 - it's still amazing even though the hardware is pitifully lacking compared to the GameCube.

I will still get a PS3, but now it has dropped in desire for me.

I think Sony will def loose MGS4 now, but they must be careful of two of thier biggest games (ff and tekken) sure white knight story will probably be big but nothing like tekken or final fantasy.

Recently hironbu saksguichi stated that ff should go 360, and there is a lot of potentional on the 360.

Great news! I don't want to have to be buying a PS3 and 360 in the next couple of years. The less exclusives the better for me!

With the 360 being the first next-gen console out the gates, how could it have a good start? Most of the PS3 games are out on 360 too, developers have had time developing for next-gen consoles now, it isn't all so new to them.

I really hope that Final Fantasy and MGS4 don't go over to 360 only because each console deserves to have there exclusives. Call me crazy but that's just how i feel.

yes that was the only reason i was going to get a PS3. my wallet thanks you capcom

Wow, a lot people are quick to downplay this news as making the game worse, which is quite unreasonable. Obviously there are a few examples of a game being worse due to multiple consoles, however that's the fault of the developers, not the game being multi-console. I'm sure Capcom would do a good job on all 3 platforms with the game, or is Capcom going to suddenly make DMC4 crap simply because it's not an exclusive game anymore, just like RE5 is multi-platform...

Great news for 360 owners. Glad after the months and months of rumors that we finally have conformation that DMC4 is really coming to 360. I thought it'd at least be a timed exclusive, so the fact we're getting it at the same time is even better.

And I wouldn't be worried that this will be a sloppy port job. I remember Keiji Inafune; the producer of Dead Rising and Lost planet, talking about how capcom has build there own multi-platform in-house "next-gen" engine. It was used for both Dead Rising and Lost planet and I'm 90% sure it's also being used for DMC4. Basically it lets them make the game and then "tweak" it for each system so i have no doubt that it'll look and play just as good on the 360 as it dose PS3

The biggest problem I see with this (comng from an entirely self-centered point of view) is that I'll be having to look to reviews (or possibly wait for them) to figure out which version is best for me to get. I realise that not all people plan to get both consoles, but for someone who does this is my chief concern. Kind of annoying, really.

Probably sounds like a thoroughly petty complaint, but knowing that it's multiplatform I'll want to get the best version (whether that comes down to controls, unique features, or simply some minorly differeing graphical effects) which will likely not be apparent just from looking at the back of the box in store.

Ouch for Sony, buy yippee for me as I have no intention of buying a PS3, or at least not any time soon.

And wow at all the people who suddenly think DMC4 will suck because of this.

Level 5 haven't been able to have the same success with their other games as they did with DQ8 so I'm not counting on White Knight Story to bring in the crowds.

Heavenly Sword - I'll half agree there.

But I think the real issue here is that the blockbuster franchises (GTA/DMC etc) or the sure fire hits (Assasins Creed etc) are being lost.

I think you really should watch the HD trailer of White Knight Story and than say it won't sell well. When i first saw that trailer i was amazed, same with Heavenly Sword.

It was always a rumour. I guess when Assassin's Creed moved suddenly every game was a target.

I would like White Knight Story to do well, as I believe it deserves too (From footage and Level 5's previous work). I just don't think it has a broad enough appeal. Especially since I thought that Rogue Galaxy would replicate that success of DQ8...
