Devil May Cry 4 goes multi-platform

360 News | Xbox 360 getting the game on day one, PC release to follow.
And another PS3 exclusive falls.

Capcom has announced on its Japanese website that the previously PS3 exclusive Devil May Cry 4 will also be released on the Xbox 360 and PC. While there have been unsubstantiated rumours of the possibility, it still comes as a shock, since unlike the similar rumours about the Metal Gear franchise jumping ship, the Devil May Cry series has always been exclusive to Sony machines. Also surprising is the announcement that the game will be coming to PC, although it is implied that it will be at a later date.

A machine translation of the Japanese press release reads:

"Devil May Cry 4 ' "PlayStation 3", Xbox 360, with the multi-platform of PC sale decision!, and says that after popular showings at the 2006 Tokyo Game Show, they decided to bring the game to both PS3 and Xbox 360 'simultaneously', with a later PC release assumed. The release date is only listed as 'Undecided', so it could still be a way off.

The PS3 has been going through some hard times recently, being handily outsold by its competitors in both Japan and the US every week, so Capcom's decision seems likely to be based on their perception of where money can be made. No mention of releases outside Japan yet, but given the 360 barely registers on the Japanese market, western releases would be the entire point of this announcement.

This news does not suprise me at all. 360 has like a 10 mill install base opposed to ps3's 2 mill! In fact from a business point of view Capcom would have been stupid not to take this game cross platform, its quiet clear money will always over power loyalty! As for sony, they need to muscle down and bust out with some killer first party titles! Surley if MGS4 went cross platform we would see a NO RULES BATTLE ROYALE, TO THE DEATH! Kutagri Vs. Kojima!

You know ladies gents; I feel that this is great news for us all!

Competion drives down prices. If the PS3 version is cheaper I'll go that way, if the XBOX 360 offers some special features or a nice bundle I'll pay that way, what? the PS3 version is not released in PAL territories; no problemo!

There is only one downside: publishers won't be designing the game for a particular platform bottom up so XBOX 360 & PS3 will probably look very very similar.

Well, most people I've talked to are interested in White Knight Story (especially once I show them the trailer!). I'd really like to see the success of DQ8 replicated, it will be great if it even comes close really.

White Knight Story had a huge amount of interest at the 2006 Tokyo game show! It looks like a great game.

Hmmm well i thought i did hear a romour awhile ago that mgs4 was going on the 360, if that was false then i'm really really happy. For final fantasy thou, being the big fan that i am, they have already developed some games for the nintendo branch so i could see them eventually trying to get games on there as well, but being a whole different type of platform i doubt that would happen (please god let me be right ><) As long as i dont loose my mgs4 tekken and ff series i'll survive.

oh and dont forget home XD

I dont think MGS4 will get onto the 360, because MGS2 didnt get that well reception. it didnt recive outstanding reviews on xbox, and most xbox owners had the wonderful sam fisher to occupy them, so i think that it will stay an exclusive for Sony. Its good that DMC is on the 360 it is a great game that should be experienced by all but i just hope the quality will stay the same.

Cool. I've heard good things about the DMC series, but have never taken the plunge myself.

The quality will undoubtedly be largely unaffected. Both machines are producing similar looking games, so it really boils down to a level of console preference.

Damn, three pages already. Looks like this bit of news is getting people riled up.

I was never a fan of the series anyway, so personally I couldn't care less. Although in terms of impact to Sony, it's pretty significant if only psychologically. I don't think it'll be enough to dent the sales of the system.

Sony has way too much to fall back on for this to be too fussed about this little slip. Remember it is still coming to the PS3. I hardly think DMC4 is a deciding factor for many gamers out there, especially when games like GoW3 are on the horizon. There are still plenty of reasons to want a PS3.

That is a rather stupid argument. MGS sold very well on xbox, and it was at the time an inferior game to splinter cell (which has now gone down hill). And why would a company not go to another console as well, when they could most likley sell more copies on it. Unless Sony can give them **** loads of money.

No PS3 owner is going to 'lose' any of these, nor have they 'lost' VF5, DMC4, GTA4, etc - they still get to play them, its just that 360 owners get to as well. Seems like its win win to me.

At first I thought damm.. there goes another one.. but then I realised that any game made by a 3rd party will probably never be exclusive to one console anymore. The only reason PS had these 'exclusives' to start with was mainly because it dominated the last 2 gens - but now with PS3 last out of the gates - this exclusivity can't be garunteed. But this also applies to other platforms. First Party games will be the system sellers as they will best utilise each consoles strengths.

btw I've played the DMC4 Demo - it's pretty- but plays much the same as the PS2 ...

Just Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy to go...
Both of them are all but gone. MGS is always ported cross platform, Komani don't really care.
Really?

MGS - PS exclusive, PC release
MGS: Integral - PS exclusive, PC release
MGS: VR Missions - PS exclusive
MGS2 - PS2 exclusive
MGS2: Substance - Ported to Xbox in North American/PAL regions only, Xbox version had a mediocre reception, PC release
MGS: The Twin Snakes - GameCube exclusive
MGS3: PS2 exclusive, had much lower sales than previous Metal Gear Solid titles, still wasn't ported
MGS3: Subsistence - PS2 exclusive
MGS: Portable Ops - PSP exclusive

Out of all those titles, only one was ported to another console, and only three received Windows releases. With figures like these, and Kojima himself stating Guns of the Patriots will not get a 360 release*, it really doesn't seem likely that MGS4 will go multi-platform, no matter how badly 360 fanboys believe it will or want it to.

Ouch.

And, if I was a PS3 only owner, this would annoy me. Exclusives drives sales which in turn means more games.

Which they will, and i never talked about sales i said reception and reviews. And most xbox owners italked to much prefered splinter cell to it. And whats the argument? I want arguing i was merely giving my opinion on why it isnt more likeley to get ported across to the 360.

Snake eater didnt or subsistance. It just didnt do well on the Xbox.

Thats the best thing about exclusives becoming multi platform ^
When you think of it, it can be unfair to the people who only own one console, and miss out on some top exclusives. As much as i love exclusives it sucks if you only have one machine.
Say, isn't MGS4 meant to use SIXAXIS anyway? so that means one of two things
1 - It's not going to go to the 360
2 - gameplay on the 360 is going to be different anyway, so PS3 version would still have exclusive features in a way
at least that's the way I see it... unless nintendo decides to hijack snake for another game? icon_razz.gif

Yes your deffinately right, but i'm sure people will deffinately take this to heart, more of a betrayal than anything but in the end of the day its just a game. I just feel that because it is multiplatform, they might have sacrificed a part of its end product if they were to focus on the ps3 hardware and get the most out of it.

I wouldnt mind DOA to come back to ps3 if they took it seriously and stop focusing on non-story volleyball games >.> even if they put effort in the storyline i probably would play it +_+

Yeah thats exactly right, First party exclusives tend to always look and feel the best compared to Multi platforms, but what do you do.
Lets just hope Capcom make both versions the best to there ability for both machines.

hehe i was thinking of adding that to my comment but i guess we both feel the same way, it would deffinately be a plus if they did bring both games to their best on each console

It would've been great to be able to go back in time to see what 360 owners thought of DMC yesterday?

BTW wonder if Microsoft has anything to do with these announcements coming days before the PAL PS3 launch?

Sony has no control over 3rd party's - sure Sony have basically given these devs the platform to make money for the last 2 gens - but hey, they're corporations - make a game and sell double by releasing on multi-platforms, sure, why not? But it'll be the exclusives that sell consoles (GoW, Zelda, Resistance/MotorStorm - are/will be top sellers on respective platforms)

And wow at all the people who suddenly think DMC4 will suck because of this.
All the people?? Its just me icon_razz.gif (and would be Ugh if he saw this, i think).

Im not saying "BLOMG 360 will bringdown Ps3 verszion!!one11thenumberone!1!1", just that I love exclusives since developers only have to concentrate on set of hardware instead of optimising the game for both.

The way I see it, exclusives squeeze the best out of the console and in turn are better made games.

However, if I didn't plan on owning all 3 consoles (plus PC), I would hate exclustivity.

Allot of the so called PS 'exclusives' were exclusives mainly because of the platforms dominance for last 2 gens. I mean the main competitor to PS1 was N64 - which required completley different game development - PS2 had little competition and was therefore very lucrative to design games for. If Xbox had this history they'd be in the same position now.

If FFXIII goes multi-platform does that mean PS3 lost an exclusive? FF was originally a Nintendo exclusive, so didn't it really lost the exclusivity in the first place? Were does exclusivity even start?
I guess it starts where when you think of a console you can instantly think of a game which relates to it, me personally would be ff and tekken for the ps, halo for the xbox and mario for the nintendo, even though these are probably looked more like icons for each console i think that by doing this it can be thought of as the exclusive for their console. Just imagine who many people would be outraged if there was a mario game released on the other consoles, then you'd get all sorts of people screaming that nintendo has lost an exclusive, or just angry that the other console let such a silly italian plumber into their workplace to fix the toilet >.>
