At Capcom's Gamer's Day in Japan last night, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix was unveiled for Microsoft and Sony's download services. Unlike the Street Fighter II remake also announced, Puzzle Fighter won't be getting a full makeover. The character portraits and gems have been re-drawn, but the sprites and backgrounds have just been scaled and filtered to run in 1080p, much like most old games on Xbox Live Arcade. Two new backgrounds have been added, and they also mentioned that the character's attack patterns have been tweaked to balance the game more; hopefully it doesn't ruin the great balance the game had before.
There will also be a few new modes, seemingly named after the 'isms' of Street Fighter Alpha 3, which is odd since Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo's settings were based on the superior Street Fighter Alpha 2. "X Mode" is closer to the game's original inspiration Super Puyo-Puyo (or it's western versions Mean Bean Machine and Kirby's Avalanche), where gems break when three of the same colour touch. And "Z Mode" imitates Nintendo's Panel de Pon (also known as Tetris Attack and Puzzle League), where you flip gems with a cursor.
Capcom said both versions will be available in the next six months. We've got some screens - check the Media Panel.
