Need for Speed ProStreet announced

360 News | First images revealed.
After posting up a teaser last week EA has officially announced Need for Speed ProStreet. The game is currently in development at EA Black Box in Vancouver and is scheduled to be released on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, PSP, PC and mobile.

ProStreet has undergone a graphics overhaul with the AI supposedly being a lot more aggressive this time around too. The Autosculpt system is back and you'll be able to customise the appearance of your car and its performance. EA is also claiming ProStreet will feature a "revolutionary" online mode, but we'll hold our breath on that for now.

"Need for Speed ProStreet accelerates street racing culture by providing the ultimate stage for the pursuit of supremacy," said Larry LaPierre, executive producer of the game. "This is a game about building the ultimate performance-tuned battle machine, taking it to multi-disciplinary showdowns all over the world and pitting your skills and reputation against the very best street racers."

I don't like how the 'damage' looks like someone simply went at the car with an angle-grinder. Apart from that it's looking much better than the previous games.

When are they going to take the NFS series back to how it was in Hot Pursuit and High Stakes. I don't like all the street racing/fast and the furious style game, who else agrees?

I'm sick of Need for Speed all together. It stopped being fun for me so long ago, since the Hot Pursuit and High Stakes days.

But it sells so well. Go figure.

What a drab tacked on series this has been anyways. I remember Need for Speed 1 & 2 on the PC were cool and that's about as far as it got.

I'll wait for proper ingame footage then glossed over images before reserving my judgement. Hopefully the drag racing isn't as bad as in most wanted.

Underground was a nice little change, but everything after that is pure ****.

It used to be about exotic tracks and exotic cars. As RKO'd said, its now just an extension of Fast and the Furious.

Like I said before, I am just waiting for the serries to become more realistic. Looking at the new footage of the game, it looks like it won't be street racing. Rather on the track, hence the drag strip and all the tire walls, etc.

I disagree there. NFS should always remain an arcade racer. If you want realism stick to GT4, Forza or RACE. Though the arcadey handling mechanics in the last few games (from Underground to Carbon) haven't been as good as they used to be (they all have terribly sluggish handling).

As far as the glory days of Hot Pursuit and High Stakes goes, they're long gone, people today want ricers that have been 'pimped up' to within an inch of their lives. Most Wanted was a step in the right direction (back towards the more exciting HP roots), but the mainstream complained about how it turned away from the tuner aspect. That's why we got the downright average Carbon.

Would you like to buy me a PS3 or Xbox 360 to play these games?

Your never going to see a realistic racer on the Wii. The hardware won't allow and it definately doesn't suit the market of Wii owners.

And to add insult to injury, all the future NFS games are going to be worse on the Wii as well.

(btw, the 360 is only about $200 more than the Wii and that includes 2-3 games).

i think Need for Speed needs to evolve again.

i really liked NFS 1, 2 and Hot Pursuit, but then i think the series stagnated for High Stakes and HP2.
i liked the re-invention to Underground, but i haven't really liked the series since. they've been far too similar in style.

i don't really know what they should do instead. i agree that it should remain an arcade racer, rather than simulator, but how it should proceed in order to not simply be a rehash of Underground 2, Most Wanted, Carbon; i don't know.

---
i disagree about the Wii statement. i think GTPro 2 is a pretty good port of a reasonable driving sim, it just needs some more polish, rather than a simple porting from Gamecube, and it'll be a competent game. just because it's cel-shaded, doesn't mean it's arcadey. it's essentially a rip-off of Gran Turismo. even the initial track is reminiscent of High Speed Ring.

i actually really like tuning cars and making them look sik am i alone

I'm not event talking about the Wii, I'm hinting to the PC!

I would never want something realistic on the Wii for the facts that you stated. All the racing sims are console specific, thats why if EA brought out a realistic NFS, you know it wont be console specific.

In saying that, being a realistic racer, I want to be able to put what parts I want in the car, eg not this crappy pro package, sports package, etc. I choose what brand turbo etc I want to put in, each different brand changing the performance and things like, different brand blow off valves making different sounds. Instead of the spoilers being aesthetic feature, it actually makes a difference to the downforce.

Tuning the car, you know changing gear ratios, tire pressure, even the slightest details, in changing the tacho, so that the shift light will go on at the RPM you specify.

@DEJA VU
given how well the import-car based NFS games have sold, no, you aren't.

i just wish they hadn't fallen into the EA Sports yearly iteration model with this series.

Edit: Onggie posted before i did, so editing to make mine make sense.

Oh yeah I know what you mean. Can't think of anything that exists on the PC like that though.

GTR2 was well received last year but I never had a chance to play it so maybe check that out?

i can't think of a single game on ANY platform that's as detailed as what Onggie would like. sure Forza and Gran Turismo have some of that stuff, but not down to branding differences.

GTR2 is an awesome game, but it's not really a tuning sim*, just a racing sim.
that said, it's by far the most accurate racing sim i've seen, and even supports MoTeC car telemetry software, as well as hardware that will register head motion while you go to check the mirrors.

a good steering wheel peripheral is a must though. no point having such hardcore simulation spoilt by using a control pad, or keyboard to steer.

*by this, i mean that yes, you can play with every single setting you could think of, but it's not "put this brand turbo in" and see the difference.

I mentioned RACE and there is its older brother, GTR2. There's actually heaps of racing sims on the PC that are more obscure than mainstream games. I suggest you try Live For Speed, it's a hardcore racing sim developed by an indy games company.

what happened to racing euro cars through euro streets. that was the great thing about the first two need for speeds!

I would go for burnout instead of the need for speed these days. Same game, one concentrates on the crashing ( = fun) and the other concentrates on the modding ( = can't be bothered!)

Yep, definetly agree with the BO comment!

I played Live For Speed for about 1 & 1/2 years icon_smile.gif. I enjoyed it heaps, but yer got a bit tired of it and gave my account to my mate to have.

EDIT: There also seems to be some previews already.

Car Customization

Now this area was focused on a lot and it is one of the items that will be brining a lot to the next title besides damage.

This year they have gone all out on customizing your car performance wise.

90+ part slots
300+ tuning variables
1000+ aftermarket parts
250+ aftermarket companies
All real aftermarket parts
Dyno your car for best performance

So you will be able to choose exactly what part you want in your engine such as the type of turbo and exactly how to tune it or what manifold to use, Mixing of different parts will be allowed and will have bonuses as well as negative effects. You can also choose different rims and tires you are not required to one set or brand for your whole car. Each part and tuning variable will have an affect on your car. Now if you are not interested in choosing exactly what parts you want on your car or how you want it tuned there will also be levels as there has been in previous versions for everyone out there that just wants to go fast right away without any hassle.

You also will have the ability to paint single parts (all of them).

Autosclupting will be allowed for every exterior part on your car as well but will also have affects on your aero and performance.

There will also be a real time wind tunnel / dyno to tune your car for the maximum performance this will also be very useful with autosclupting.

The body kits will be one piece this time and be more true to real world body kits.

Same game my arse. icon_rolleyes.gif

After hearing about what EA want to do with this game, I'm quite interested in it actually. Plus whenever EA take the franchise in a new direction they always seem to pull it off. The original Underground was great (2 not so much), Most Wanted was great (Carbon not so much), hell even Hot Pursuit was great (HP2 not so much). There's definitely a pattern there and since ProStreet is taking the series in a new direction, I definitely hold an interest in the title.

But hey, Nismo wants the new Need for Speed game. Casual gamer GET! icon_rolleyes.gif

EA has tarnished the NFS name too deeply for me to start paying any interest now.

Underground was one of my most anticipated games when it was first released, but since then it's been nothing be re-hash after re-hash. But this is different? It's too late for me to care.
