F.E.A.R. Files demo available on Xbox Live

360 News | Get ready to be S.C.A.R.E.D. all over again.
A demo for F.E.A.R. Files is now available for download on the Xbox Live Marketplace. It comes in at a hefty 585 MB.

F.E.A.R. Files for the Xbox 360 includes the original PC expansion F.E.A.R.: Extraction Point and the all-new mission F.E.A.R.: Perseus Mandate. The demo of the paranormal first-person shooter introduces the events of Extraction Point. Assuming the role of an elite special forces commando, players are tasked with laying waste to hordes of supernatural Replica soldiers in close-quarters combat. F.E.A.R. Files comes with the same destructive arsenal of weapons as well as the new Mini-gun.

In the demo you can expect the terrifying action, destructive environments, souped-up enemy AI and paranormal storyline staple to the F.E.A.R. franchise. F.E.A.R. Files is set to be released in Australia this holiday season.

So like, does this expanison require the orignal? Or does it ship with the full game as well?

No original needed, but it only includes Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate.

Well that's crap. They should include the orignal as well.

Or you could buy the original for like 30 bucks?

Plus those of us who've already bought the original shouldn't have to buy it again (ie. it would probably cost more if it included the original game - although Orange Box doesn't follow this formula of course, including HL2 in its entirety).

The other thing is maybe (hopefully) there's so much meat in the expansion packs that the original simply wouldn't fit on the disc... (That sounded weird cos I'm actually vegan! lol)

Anyway, I liked the demo and while it reminded me of all the reasons I love FEAR (flicking in and out of slow-mo mainly), it also reminded me how dated some elements have become. Health score out of 100? Need to find / use health packs to stay alive?? Torch running out of battery every 20 seconds???

These are old mechanics is all and they are starting to hold the franchise back. I for one hope Project Origin (aka FEAR 2) fixes these issues and also brings something fresh. (After BioShock, I can't help it - I want some telekinesis!!)

The demo was also a little too short I thought.

^ HL2: EP2 uses those same 'dated' mechanics, and they don't seem to be all that detrimental to the quality of the game. /nitpick

If every game coming out these days used the 'hide behind something and magically heal yourself' system that'd become pretty stale too.

Yeah you're right, I concede. icon_smile.gif

The magic healing thing is good for a 'counter-weight' to possible frustration though. For example, if done right it should rule out situations where you simply don't have enough med kits to progress.

Ammo can always be a problem, though I don't think the world is ready for re-generating ammo just yet. icon_wink.gif

EDIT: That wasn't well thought out. There's plenty of examples of never-ending ammo and in general it's a good thing. Not enough coffee!

i'm much happier in games with numerical/percentile based health than i am with regenerating health.

well - probably not "happier" at those times when health is low, but in general i prefer this old mechanic as i think it encourages a more cautious approach to fights.
the first game i remember encountering this Wolverine-style regeneration was Call of Duty 2 on PC (it was probably in Halo 1 on PC too, but i don't really recall it), and really i haven't liked it since then. i don't like it because the way we approach the objectives changed from self-preservation-ly killing the opposition and advancing to simply rushing the exit and then laying low until you can rush another exit.

Halo 3 rectified this in some areas, by giving checkpoints that are relevant to killing of opposition, but even then there were some parts that were simply easier to bum-rush the exit.

---
i think the difference between Half-Life 2/Orange Box and FEAR/FEAR Files is that HL2 hasn't been released for XBox 360/PS3 as yet, whereas FEAR has. so through Orange Box you get a HD version of HL2 as well.

re: the demo.

i haven't actually played the demo, but i have played through Extraction Point on PC, and basically if you haven't quite finished the original FEAR, i would avoid the demo as the full game literally picks up where the final cutscene of FEAR ends. so if you wish to avoid spoilers, don't be a dumbarse and start the demo.

As someone who enjoyed F.E.A.R. would you recommend Extraction Point as worthy of playing? I never quite got around to it, and now wonder whether I should pick it up or not.

i didn't like the story of EP.

there were elements i liked, but basically it retconned a lot of what happened through the original, and because it wasn't made by the creators of that world, i can't see them being particularly happy with what was done, but the gameplay and everything were still just as awesome as they were in FEAR.

the thing i liked least was that quite a few of the characters from the original FEAR return, but their characterisation and behaviour changed dramatically from the original - to the point of being completely different in some cases.
it mightn't have been as noticeable if i had finished FEAR when it came out, but i didn't, and played them immediately after eachother, so to me it was very noticeable.

i am, however, still planning on picking up Perseus Mandate when it comes out.

Ah, bummer. in that case I'll pick it up if I see it kicking around nice and cheap, but won't go to any effort to source it.

Cheers for that icon_smile.gif

I loved the original FEAR yet Extraction Point felt very stale to me, it added nothing new to the game really. Story was poor, virtually non-existent. Plus it was by a different team of developers, hence I'm expecting the true FEAR sequel by Monolith to be the 'true' continuation of the story.

I will probably not pick up Perseus Mandate either. I highly recommend the original FEAR though, just make sure you play through it on a highish difficulty, then you get to witness the absolutely amazing AI in the game icon_eek.gif

Yeah, I got F.E.A.R. at launch and loved every second of it icon_biggrin.gif

I actually played in the MP beta that came with the pre-order - which was some of the most fun I've had in FPS multiplayer ever. Once the game was out and people were flooding the servers though... well icon_sad.gif
