Perfect Dark to receive 'true' sequel?

360 Rumour | A perfect rumour?
An article by Indian game outlet, GameGuru, has begun the sparks for what could be some very big news indeed. In their article, they claim that Rare is developing another game in the Perfect Dark series. The game is said to be darker (no pun intended), and featuring a new 'morality system', with choices impacting on story and gameplay. The article further states that the game will 'probably' take the Half-Life/Bioshock approach, with all plot points taking place from within the players perspective.

GameGuru estimates an announcement will be made next year sometime. With the long time-frame, it is safe to shelve this one strongly under the 'rumour' category, although with both Kotaku and IGN reporting on this one, and the recent Bungie/Microsoft split rumour turning out to be correct, anything could happen.

UPDATE: GamesIndustry.biz contacted Rare over the story, and received the following response from Lee Schuneman, head of production: "There's always rumours going around about different games we may or may not be doing but we'd prefer not to comment on rumours at this stage." While this is by no means an emphatic denial, it's also no confirmation. We would expect any announcement, if there is one, to be made once the latest Banjo Kazooie has been released.

Morality, eh? So you get the choice of petting the puppy or kicking it. I love games and their failed attempts at giving us freedom of choice.

Oh, and kudos to Rare for cashing in and following suit with already successful FPS stylings, just like they used to... oh wait, they were actually original back in the day, whoops.

Ah, it's probably going to be on DS as a dating sim with Joanna and Elvis. The chemistry is there, think about it... icon_confused.gif

I love Perfect Dark, so any shot Rare has at redeeming themselves for the disappointment that was PDZ is great news. Glass half full, people, glass half full.

Please stop raping my childhood. Please do not remake any more Rare games from the N64.

Prefect Dark Z was a terrible game. I was bitterly dissapointed. Hopefully Rare can redeem themselves here.

To be honest I'd rather they concentrated their efforts elsewhere. Put your time into Banjo 360, Rare.

Rare have alot of ground to make up for, as their resume is incredibly tarnished since the move to Microsoft. I think they understand the sort of pressure they are under, but the 'dream team' that brought us GoldenEye and Perfect Dark on the N64 are long gone doing other things (such as working in Free Radical)..

Good luck to them, is all I can say. They have really big boots to fill.

There's a tenous link believe it or not, that weird gizmo attached to the 360 controller was te brainchild of some frustrated pdz player who wanted to get all the achievements, including one where you must join 200(2000?2 million, i dunno, a high number regardless) multiplayer games.

Since he didn't have that much time or inclination, he made that lil robot that joined games, and then quitted for him, over and over until he reached his goal.

......

ayways, ooohhhhhh, morality in a game?Be evil or good?OOOOHHH, that's never been done before, the originality.......bends the mind!

In their defense, PDZ jumped between 3 platforms during its development cycle, before being rushed for the 360 launch. Even then, the game wasn't terrible. It was just a very average game, made worse by being the prequel of a game many regarded as perfect (or damn near close to it). Disappointing? Definately. Bad? Only as bad as Red Steel was.

Now, Rare seem to have free reign over the pacing of the development, they've got a bit more experience working with the 360, and this time they're actually aiming to expand the gameplay depth beyond what the standard was in 2000. I'm glad they've given the franchise another chance, it deserves it.

Edit: I don't think it's fair to knock the morality system for being unoriginal. Yes, it's been done before, but would you rather the game give you a choice or not? Like I said before, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. It could turn out to be as rich as what the morality system looks to be in Mass Effect, or it could turn out to be as black & white as Bioshock. Neither are to the game's detriment.

I really hope this news it true. I really enjoyed PDZ despite all it's faults. Sure it didn't stand up to the greatness of the original but the multiplayer was solid and a lot of fun and the single player had some great moments/levels but overall was a little sloppy.

It'll be interesting to see if Rare can make a better game now they don't have to rush for launch and can take things at a slower pace. I mean if they bring it out this time next year they'll of had 3 or so years to work on it which you'd think would be enough time. Hopefully we'll hear something early next year about it

I have higher hopes for this one.

Perfect Dark, being my favourite FPS of its time, I still regard highly.

One of my problems with Zero was that it was almost entirely alien to the first story, being a prequel, and a cartoony one at that, it just didn't gel with the original game.

With this as a sequel to the first title, as opposed to another Zero-esque spin-off, and because it is not being ported from platform to platform and rushed to fit in with a console launch, I am hoping dearly for a return to the Perfect Dark of old.

References of the original characters, Daniel Carrington, Jonathan Dark, Cassandra DeVries, Trent Easton, Mr. Blonde, and of course Elvis, will put the sequel well into the right direction.

Bring back all the original weapons and their secondary functions, and include at least one revisit to a location from the original game. Hell, I'd love to see the Carrington Institute fully remade and acting as a central hub for the game, with new missions.

The story in Zero did not at all feel serious, it was like you were just there to romp between a few varied and brightly coloured locations, and the architecture of the levels was like nothing in the original game, and just felt cheesy.

I have faith that this game will surpass Zero, and hope it will meet the greatness of the original.

They should just spend a few months knocking up a high resolution version/emulation/port of Perfect Dark (original) for the XBL arcade. Add in modern controls (dual sticks) and sell it for 20-30 bucks. It'll get everyone pumped and remind people what Rare were (are?) capable of!

All the more reason for the glass to be half full, no? icon_wink.gif

Like a few others in here I'm really hoping this rumour is true. Obviously PDZ was a step back for the (now) series but I still don't think it was bad as everyone made it out to be. Okay so yes, the single-player campaign was an absolute mess but it still had Co-Op (which the original did) so that's a plus (people seem to think Co-Op in gaming started with Gears of War these days...). Multiplayer wise, well it was actually pretty good if you gave it the time or had the right people playing. It had nothing on the original Perfect Dark's multiplayer, but it wasn't bad either. It redeemed the game for me a little bit but yes overall, it was quite a disappointment when compared to the original (which I also hold as the best FPS ever and as one of my favourite games of all time). So yeah, if this rumour is true then I really hope Rare can make a true Perfect Dark sequel that continues on the brilliance of the original and also redeems their reputation in the process.

I do believe Rare have some ground to make and what better way to prove themselves than by bringing back the old.
Pull it off guys.
