Codemasters announces Race Driver: GRID

360 News | From the creators of Colin Mcrae: DiRT and V8 Supercars.
Publisher Atari and developer Codemasters have announced Race Driver: GRID, formerly known by its working title, Race Driver One. This new racing title will apparently focus on the race itself, rather than activities outside of the race, such as buying cars, upgrading them and tuning them.

Instead, the emphasis will be on everything that happens during the race, from the starting grid to the crashes to the finish line. Codemasters are aiming to create a strong sense of 'race day atmosphere' - exactly how they will do so is unknown at this point. Race Driver: GRID will use an enhanced version of the Colin Mcrae: DiRT engine, which featured accurate damage modelling, realistic physics and striking graphics.

The races will be hosted on three different continents - Europe, the US and Japan - and will take place in a wide variety of locations, including official race tracks, road events and urban street races. The cars available will also vary considerably, from new to classic, and from circuit to drift.

Race Driver: GRID is set to get the green light on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in mid-2008.

Those screenshots are incredible. They might not be as high-poly as GT5, but the context makes it look better, in my opinion.

why get rid of all the outside stuff in racing i like buying the cars and tuning them it adds to the atmosphere. All the pre stuff is fun.

Then it's not the game for you, corder icon_wink.gif Try every other racing game. Focus on the race itself should mean it's a great experience. I'll be watching this one.

DirT was a masterpiece, this should be no different. Start maximum anticipation....now.

Gameplayer.com.au have an article claiming that we (as in Australia) are getting two games from Codemasters; the aforementioned GRID and our own game purely based on the V8 Supercars. Can PALGN possibly confirm this?

Either way, GRID looks quite good but until Codies elaborates a little more on what they mean by focusing on the race (as in how they're going to approach it), I'm not going to get too excited just yet.

Nismo: I'd say unlikely, the confusion probably stems from the fact that previous games in the series have only been called V8 Supercars in Aus, and TOCA Race Driver elsewhere.

Most racing games have already had 5+ years of work done on the racing part of the game, I fail to see how it'll make a big enough difference in this game that they feel they don't need to keep up with the common features (outside of the race) of almost all other competing titles.

is it just me, or does it look like Codemasters are looking to get in on the Need For Speed Underground style of games?

unfortunate, if this is the case. there's already too many of these, imo.

I'd disagree - both Juiced 2 HIN and NFS Prostreet should be entirely discounted as titles fit for play. What else is there?

The game looks fantastic. Though I shudder to think how high the system requirements could be. DIRT's framerate was barely in the acceptable zone, and this game looks to push even further with more cars on the course at the one time. I hope Codemasters do some work optimizing the engine before this is released, GRID looks to be my next racing fix.

I'm sure the game will be great but I'm sure it will be called something V8 Supercars in Australia.

Perhaps but the article I mentioned above claimed that Atari Australia (who publish Codemasters' games here) confirmed it to them, so it could be true. That's why I posted in here to see if PALGN could confirm, so er yeah, can I possibly get confirmation?

looking very swish from these screens.

It has potential, hopefully they can pull it off.
