Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory delayed until 2005

Xbox News | Sam Fisher's third game due to miss the Christmas rush as Ubisoft seeks to 'maximise the marketing impact'.
Ubisoft announced this afternoon that the next game in the popular Splinter Cell series, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, will not be appearing on any format in 2004, with the title now due on all platforms in March 2005. Ubisoft initiated the delay 'in order to maximise the marketing impact', which sounds suspiciously as though Ubisoft wants to avoid what could well be the most competitive Christmas period ever for the videogames industry. And with commercial heavyweights such as Halo 2 and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas due to appear on shop shelves in the run-up to the festive period, not to mention Ubisoft's own Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, it's perhaps an understandable fear.

The title had been due out this November on the Xbox and PC, with Gamecube and PlayStation 2 versions to follow next March. Now, a simultaneous multi-platform release is looking likely.

With the current onsalught of xmas titles, I don't think pushing it out till March next year will hurt sales. Why make a gamer make a choice when they will happily buy both in a 6 month period? I'm actually glad they are because I have at least six games between now and xmas that I'll have trouble finding time to play. Personally I'm happy to see them push back the development, cause I want to see the multiplayer rival Halo 2!!! icon_smile.gif
