Worms 4 in the making

Xbox News | Back to basics with the Worms series.
Having been on the decline as far as quality goes for too many years, the Worms series, if Codemasters are to be believed, is on the right track again with its 4th outing.

Set to be as "infectious and accessible as classic Worms offerings," the original development team have apparently regrouped in an effort to revert the games back to the style of the first few releases.

The game, entitled Worms 4: Mayhem, will for the first time enable players to create their own weapons through the use of a weapons factory. The Worms themselves are also customizable, and everything from their hair to their dying words can be designed to suit ones own comedic dispositions.

Although proclaimed to be similar to early releases, the game is still in Trois Dimension (note: that was French), with an improved 3D camera, fully destructible environment, 25 singleplayer missions as well as an all-important multiplayer mode for gamers to indulge themselves with.

Worms 4: Mayhem is set to be released in the second quarter of this year for the Playstation 2, Xbox and PC.

After Worms 3D, I'll be being very, very cautious with this one. icon_razz.gif

Why not a release on the PS2?

The game is currently being developed for PS2, Xbox and PC. There wasn't a Gamecube version announced.

well, worms 3d and worms forts siege were enough for me. I'm not sure how much further Team 17 can go.

they ruled at first, but the varying options in the game were way too limited.

Worms was a brilliant series, until World Party that was rubbish. Then they released that puzzler which was also rubbish (judging from the demo mind). Worms 3D was terrible. They should make 4 in 2D, or just hurry up with the Worms Armageddon patch, they've been on beta 2 for what seems like forever.

I totally agree. Having them make another 2D game might not be such a bad idea...
...but seeing as they're blatantly not from the screenshots on the site, the only possible way they can make Worms 4 good for me is if they reintroduce caverns and tunneling weapons, and change Ninja Roping so it's as intuitive and fun as it was in the old games. That was a major section of Worms lost from Worms 3D; it totally ripped out its core. I understand their reasons, but... really, if it's not got tunneling and caverns, then it's not Worms; just don't bother.
Hopefully they are doing this (sounds hopeful from the article).

The feel of the game could do with changing too. I prefer Armageddon and World Party's style to the more "realistic" 3D worms.

I remember the original because my cousins would never let me have a go and that I could never get the sound working. >_<
