Halo 2 hits 6.4 million units worldwide

Xbox News | That's a big number alright.
According to Microsoft, the Xbox' mighty action game, Halo 2, has reached 6.4 million copies worldwide. Microsoft went on further to describe that Halo 2 had surpassed Halo (which had previously been the best-selling game for Mircosoft) by record numbers, in just a few short months.

As it stands the Halo franchise has sold 12.8 million units around the world, and helped Microsoft established 1.4 million users for its Xbox Live gaming service.

Halo 2 sits at number 5 this week on the Australian gaming charts. It will be interesting to see how many copies of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas have been sold worldwide, in comparison to Halo 2.

EH?! So Halo 2 outsold Halo by record numbers, yet the total units sold is 50/50? icon_dumb.gif

Anyway, yay for them, hopefully they have enough money to drop Halo now. icon_razz.gif

Sorry article was done late at night, even though that's no excuse.

Numbers may have been rounded obvisously, so chances are Halo 2 has outsold Halo, even by 1 copy. The fact that it outsold it in a few months is what I think Microsoft were trying to boast about. But hey you know Microsoft I suppose saying it sold by record numbers sounds better to them. icon_lol.gif

Hmm. Well that means Halo 1 and 2 COMBINED have still sold less then Just GTA: Vice city on PS2 (14 million), and now up to almost one fifth of Super Mario Bros (66 million)

Just where are the 'records'? It's only a record for them, in their (world) #3 placed console.

Check out the sales charts, there were only 2 weeks when Halo 2 was even on the top of the charts in the USA.

Jeez, Super Smash Bros Melee has sold (almost) as many as Halo, and there are 15 PS2 games that have sold more then either.

I Hate PR garbage.

Yeah, I guess the short time period is what they were aiming at... silly Microsoft icon_razz.gif

Is that here, or worldwide? If it's here, that's because we're morons. If it's worldwide, that's a damn shame. It really is the best game of 2004 IMO. Much more organic then MP1, which was the GOTY 2002 (or 2003 in PAL).

I find this amusing simply for the fact that all Microsoft did was announce how many copies of Halo 2 have been sold worldwide and saying that it has surpassed Halo in months which no doubt it has.

Microsoft did not claim this broke any records (except become its best selling game) so why are you getting so ruffled up. Seems to me, you have something against Microsoft and their #3 console.

I don't try to hide that. There's only 2 ways to look at xbox's loss of US$3 billion so far. 1. Bad buisness that is bad for the industry (that is: a $3 billion loss is a massive, massive failure) 2. A more sinister motive to buy an industry out from under those who created it (that is, ruining it with the attitude 'if I can't profit from it, damn them no-one will')

However, the word 'record' was used generically, implying that it's a record for anyone, not just for #3 them.

but it's not actually lying... you just need to investigate that little deeper to find the truth in terms of the bigger picture...

i'm sure Nintendo (and Sony, and Sega and any other game company you care to mention) have bent the truth to there own agenda at some time or other...

Well, it's definitely ahead. NPD (US sales tracker) reported over 5 million copies sold so far, and then there were all of those reports from the UK of record sell throughs back in October, so one can assume it'll surpass Vice City soon, just as it surpassed GTA3 quickly.

The US, I guess... NPD again. But I imagine it was similar elsewhere...?
(I have no clue where you'd go to get worldwide and regional statistics on game sales! icon_lol.gif)

Where are you getting them from? I just spent a while looking on Google and I found nothing except rabid fanboys and old news icon_lol.gif

Anyway, whether GameCube is #2 or #3, it doesn't really matter, Nintendo're still doing really poorly either way, and I don't put it down to lack of quality in their games... icon_neutral.gif
See http://www.cube-europe.com/news.php?nid=7267 .
Nintendo are just really really bad at marketing the GameCube and its games icon_kero.gif
Still, I don't really care, they're turning a profit anyway, which means they'll continue to make more games and I'll still get my Metroid / Mario / Kirby / Pokémon / [insert other Nintendo franchises here]. icon_biggrin.gif

yeah, stupid xbox fanboys.....anyway, those two are struggling for 2nd position, while the PS2 takes the cake. can't see any reason why not anyway.

Apparently the only figures that show xbox ahead of Gamecube are microsofts. Every (independant and otherwise) report I've read describes the xb as 'out of the race for #2 worldwide' because of it's dismal sales in Japan, the world's second biggest market.

Also, Nintendo seems the only company not to be lying (this generation):

For example: system power. The official figures for Gamecube polygon count is 15 million a second, which was surpassed in a launch game (Rouge Leader - 16 million fully textured bump mapped polys at 60fps) and has now been smashed by it's sequel (around 20 million p/s at 60fps)

What are the xb official specs? It was like, 100 million polys/sec, right? Well unless it's sequel beat it, the record number of fully textured polys in an xb game was for rallysport challenge, which only did 9 million/sec at 30fps

Even the PS2 has had games with more polys then the xb (Jak 2 broke 10 million, for example)

I'm not saying polys are everything in graphics, just that microsoft's figures are outrageous lies.

And so are their hardware sales figures.

well, given that the XBox was the only console to improve it's global market-share in 2004, i don't think it's unreasonable to assume that it does now hold the #2 spot...

But there's no proof. They were at least a million behind at the start of 2004, and the GC sold a lot in the US when the price dropped at the start of the year and in Japan when certain games came out (eg paper mario). The closest thing I could find is that all the annalysts say "xb and gc are battling it out for second place" - which is a far cry from the impression microsoft and all their ads has brainwahed everyone to think (that xb is "way ahead of GC and rivalling PS2", which is clearly rubbish)

You can only delete posts that noone's replied to. (Whoops.)

After I post this, I expect to see the X in the top-right-hand-corner of this post, to the right of "edit"...
Edit: Yep, there it is. (Obviously you won't be able to see it; you can't delete my posts. But it should be there whenever you post.)
