E3 2005: Final Fantasy XI confirmed for Xbox

Xbox News | In one of the biggest turnarounds for a while.
We've just recieved confirmation that Final Fantasy XI will be coming to the Xbox this year. This is a massive surprise and could be a huge advantage for Microsoft in Japan. Previously those who wanted to play Final Fantasy XI would be required to buy a PS2 with a hard-drive, but the Xbox has a hard-drive in it, so there are no such problems this time around.

We've recieved now news about whether Squaresoft will be charging extra to play this game or if it will run through Xbox Live, but PALGN will report the information as soon as we know more.

Why port an old game not many liked to begin with to a soon to be dead platform?

You're gonna have tons of people mobbing you within a very short space of time if you go around saying that icon_razz.gif
I presume you misread "XI" as "X"? icon_lol.gif

No, I meant XI.

It's ok for people to like it, it's just that if you wanted to play it, you already have it on PS2 or PC, right? And didn't Square recently basically beg people to come back to it, by re-instating their accounts?

It never sold through the roof or anything, either (as far as I know) - that's what I meant by 'not many liked'.

Who is going to buy it and sign up to play it for the first time now? Espescially on a platform that has just been dumped by it's maker (Nvidia recently announced no more chips for xbox, so it's officially out of production soon).

Don't forget, it still isn't confirmed that the Xbox 360 isn't backwards compatible.

Though if it turns out to be, I imagine Xbox support will still continue for some time (much like the PS1 after the PS2 was launched, and most likely the PS2 after the PS3 is launched)

I don't think so. PS1 was still supported because it was a profitable little side buisness for Sony. They could make the very small PSOne systems very cheaply and sell them as a 'my first system' kind of thing.
(exactly the same way Nintendo made the re-designed NES and SNES consoles while the SNES and N64 were starting up).

MS can no longer produce the hardware, since Nvidia has finished up. And even if they could, it would still be un-profitable.

Well, there's still the millions of Xboxes currently in circulation and distribution. I don't think the lifeline is cut as soon as you think, and not every single Xbox owner would jump ship come next gen either. It's usually an expensive exercise.

Edit: I thought this was a little odd. According to Gamespot, FFXI in in development for the Xbox 360 - to take advantage of the advanced Xbox Live features. Makes 500% more sense.

yeah, but other places still say xbox.....

I'd agree that 360 would seem more likley, but still makes no sense to me - it would look even more out of date!

it's quite a coup for MS either way...

i see what you mean by "not many people liked it", i think the biggest problem with it was that the game was called FF XI, i think it might have done better if they called FF: Online or something more distinctive to the previous games...

maybe not too, but just what i thought... not being a fan of the single player games...
