Atari have today revealed that their upcoming DRIV3R sequel will be titled Driver: Parallel Lines. No other information was revealed by Atari, however, the game will be available on current-generation consoles and is set for release next year. As soon as we know more we'll report back.
I'm so glad it's not actually called DRIV4R. I was just imagining the dialogue. "I AR TEH DRIVAR! pH34r M3!!111" Or something equally ridiculous. Big sigh of relief.
This generation of consoles? Surely that is a stupid move considering it probably won't release until half way through 2006 and there is a good chance that two, if not 3 of the next generation consoles will be out. Plus with only a year of development it will be rather rushed, surely delaying it and making it release on the next generation would be a more smarter move?
Then again, nobody will care after the atrocious Driv3r. I will give this title a few glances as news arrives incase Atari/Reflections surprise us and make an awesome game but things don't look too good do they? *thinks about returning to good Driver experiences with the two Ps1 versions*
Don't think about it, do it! Driver 1 on the PS1 is fantastic. It was the first time I experienced a free-roaming city, and the gameplay is just tonnes of fun. That chase movie option was awesome; I'd created some pretty cool chase movies with that thing. And the theme music was baaad-ass (that's a good thing).
It's tragic when such an amazing IP can degererate so badly, especially considering what it could have been. What confuses me the most is that development hadn't even changed hands. Reflections created Driver and it's Reflections that is screwing it up. You could say that creating it gives them to right to f*** it up, but if you did say that you'd be dumb.
I was really looking forwards to Driver 3 which made it that much more dissapointing. I'm not getting my hopes up for this one, no matter how good it might look through production. And if it turns out great then Hooray. If not, I wouldn't be surprised, and that's the sad thing.
(harmonica plays a sad tune and Capoeira walks off into sunset, never to be seen again...)
Reflections stuffed it up because Atari had hyped it so much and pretty much forced them to rush the game to get it out not only before San Andreas released, but also to try and gain the sales thanks to the hype. Despite how pathetic the final result was, the tactic worked unfortunately.
I have confidence in Reflections in that they can make good games but only when the pressure isn't there. Here's hoping Atari give them more development time.
As for the Ps1 versions, I am seriously thinking about giving them a run again. My copy of FFVII finally arrived so I need my Ps1 memory card to play it. Both the Driver games are in storage as is the memory card so I might pick them up today.
^ except it doesn't explain why the PC version wasn't fixed up before it's release... afterall there were a few months between console and PC releases...
and the fact that it had been in production for as long as i can remember doesn't help it... how can it be so bad, when it had been in production for so long?
