X05: Peter Jackson on board for Halo the movie

Xbox News | Beardy director takes on executive producing role.
Peter Jackson has been announced as the Executive Producer for the forthcoming Halo movie at X05 today, further fuelling our suspicions that the film might - just might - not be the straight-to-video, sub-Van Damme manure we were expecting. Jackson, who of course directed the Lord of the Rings trilogy of films, is the second major talent to have joined the project, after Alex Garland (who wrote 28 Days Later) was confirmed as the scriptwriter for the film ages ago.

Apparently though, the presence of Jackson will also mean the film benefits from having WETA Digital as the film's acting special effects house. Having left many filmgoers thoroughly impressed by their work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy, WETA's interpretation of the Halo universe promises to be intriguing for fans of the game.

Speaking to the press today, Universal Producer Mary Parent was clearly thrilled at having snagged Jackson for the project: 'First, let me just say how honoured and excited I am to be involved in this project,' said Parent, dollar signs whizzing by in her eyes. 'We've made it our mission to try and involve the absolute very best people one can imagine in every capacity. Having developed a great relationship with Peter through the extraordinary Kong experience, and seeing first hand just how unique a filmmaking environment he's crafted, we approached him about the possibility of coming aboard to Exec Produce. Not surprisingly, he was already an avid fan of the game, and given our existing shorthand, he said yes!'

Now I have an excuse to tell the people who try to make me watch LotR for the direction and special effects; "I'm waiting for his next film, that is less [less] likely to bore me to death."

Ah, this is a HUGE mistake, LOTR trilogy is a masterpiece, this movie will suck ass just like the games, he shouldnt have his name connected to it in anyway.

Halo is one of the best games ever IMO

At least, Uwe Boll isn't involved.

It's heresy to say so, but meh, here goes: The Lord of the Rings trilogy is hammy, hopelessly over-acted by much of the cast and has weak characterisation.

I can see it already:

I think this is great news. Peter Jackson is unlikely to involve himself in your typical crappy game-to-movie translation (*cough* Resident Evil *cough*), and it'll mean critics are going to be more likely to take it seriously.

"Oh, another movie based on a game? Great... this is going to be ****... Wait, Peter Jackson's involved? Hey, this could be GOOD..."

More to the point, Microsoft is pinning their hopes on this driving people into a Halo 3-buying frenzy, so they're unlikely to even run the risk of it being anything less than blockbuster material.
